The amber forest is a world without people. 40 million years ago, the amber was simply resin that slid down tree trunks in the deserted forest. Insects and plants got trapped in the resin. It is fascinating to look into a piece of amber that conceals knowledge of an age that no human has ever experienced.

Caught in time
It is not that uncommon to find insects in amber, and it is in a way both a fascinating and sad story. The trapped insects provide a fantastic insight into the buzzing and buzzing life of the primeval forest, but it is also the story of tiny living creatures that met their demise and became preserved forever in amber.
In the microscope, you can study a large collection of trapped insects, but you may also find a piece of shed skin from a lizard or the hair of a long-extinct mammal. These razor-sharp images of situations from our distant past show us glimpses of life on our planet more than 40 million years ago.

Have you ever been lucky enough to find amber? Whether or not you have, you know that you have to be extraordinarily lucky to find a large chunk of amber. Or very good at reading the wind and the sea to know when it is amber weather.
In the exhibition Gold of the West Coast, you meet the amber collectors on the beach. They tell you how to find amber – and show you the most beautiful finds they have made themselves. Maybe you will get some tips and tricks that you can use. At least you can find out how to recognize amber and learn to tell the difference between amber and stone.
